On February 9, 2021, the Centre for Languages organised the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) workshop for Intensive English (IEN) students, the general public, and lecturers. Ms. Joyce Cheah Kim Sim, a lecturer at Centre for Language (CFL), led the workshop through the Zoom platform. The workshop was highly detailed, covering all four skills tested in IELTS. Ms. Joyce explained to the students on the layout of the test for the various skills and included detailed information about the test procedures. She also addressed the types of questions that can be anticipated in the Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing assessments and how to approach them.
Samples of questions were also shown to students, along with some good sample answers to students that will help them achieve a high band. Ms. Joyce also showed an excerpt from a band 8 Speaking test to illustrate to students that a good IELTS band is not out of reach as long as test-takers are positive, fluent, and have a good and adequate vocabulary. A large percentage of the attendees expressed gratitude for the workshop and claimed the trainer had given them a clearer understanding of what to expect during the IELTS exam.
